From biophilic pergolas to smart motorised awnings, here are the five biggest outdoor living trends we're seeing across homes and luxury apartments this year.
Indian homeowners have never been more serious about their outdoor spaces. Post-pandemic, the terrace and balcony went from afterthoughts to priority rooms. In 2026, that trend has matured into a distinct design language. Here's what we're seeing.
1. Biophilic Pergolas
The trend is no longer just a pergola — it's a pergola integrated with living plants. Louvred pergolas with side planters, climbing plant frames, and integrated irrigation systems create a green canopy that's both structural and alive. Monstera, bougainvillea, and jasmine are favourites for Indian climates.
2. Smart Motorisation
Motorised awnings, zip blinds, and louvred roof systems controlled via smartphone app or voice assistant are now standard in premium projects. The Somfy TaHoma system integrates all motorised products into a single app. Wind sensors auto-retract awnings when speeds exceed a set threshold.
3. Neutral, Earthy Colour Palettes
The once-popular white pergola is giving way to warmer tones: sand, driftwood, warm grey, and terracotta. These colours integrate better with natural stone, wood decking, and the terracotta tile roofs common across Indian architecture. We've seen a 60% increase in requests for non-white powder coat finishes.
4. Multi-Zone Outdoor Rooms
Larger terraces are being divided into functional zones — a dining zone under a pergola, a lounge zone with a sail shade, and a garden zone with raised planters. Zip blinds act as moveable "walls" between zones, creating flexible spaces that adapt to different uses throughout the day.
5. Minimal Frame, Maximum Glass
Clear zip blinds and minimal-frame pergola systems that maximise transparency are trending heavily in apartments with premium views. The goal is to create full weather enclosure while making it feel like there's nothing between you and the view. Ultra-clear 1.0mm PVC is increasingly replacing 1.5mm in high-end projects.
"2026 is the year the outdoor space became the most designed room in the Indian home. We're seeing budgets that rival a full interior renovation being invested in terraces and balconies."
