Not all window mesh is the same. Fly screens keep insects out. Security mesh keeps intruders out. Here's everything you need to know before buying.
Walk into any hardware store and you'll find "window mesh" — but the category covers products that are radically different in what they do, what they're made of, and what they cost. This guide breaks it down clearly.
Fly Screen (Fibreglass Mesh)
Standard fly screens use a woven fibreglass or aluminium mesh with openings of about 1.2mm — fine enough to stop mosquitoes, flies, and most insects, while allowing excellent airflow. Fibreglass is the most common because it's affordable, flexible, and doesn't crease like aluminium.
Key facts:
- Mesh: 18×16 weave, 0.28mm wire diameter
- Blocks: mosquitoes, flies, moths, most small insects
- Material: Fibreglass (standard) or aluminium (more durable)
- Cost: Most affordable option
- Security: None — easily cut or pushed out
Security Mesh (Stainless Steel)
Security mesh is woven from marine-grade 316 stainless steel wire at 1.6mm diameter with a 12mm aperture. It is engineered to resist cutting, kicking, and impact. Despite the heavy-duty specs, it looks almost identical to a standard fly screen from a distance — maintaining your home's aesthetics.
Key facts:
- Material: 316 stainless steel, 1.6mm wire
- Tested to AS5039 security standard (kick and cut resistant)
- Still allows good airflow and insect protection
- Ideal for: ground floor windows, louvred windows, sliding doors
- Cost: 2–3× standard fly screen — but provides home security
"If you're on the ground floor or a lower apartment level, security mesh is one of the best value security investments you can make. It's invisible to look at but provides serious resistance to forced entry."
Privacy Mesh (65% Opacity)
Privacy mesh is a woven fabric with 65% blockage — you can see out from inside in daylight, but people outside cannot see in. It works because of the contrast in light levels between inside and outside. At night when interior lights are on, the effect reverses. Privacy mesh also blocks insects and allows airflow.
Which Should You Choose?
Ground floor or easily accessible windows: security mesh. Upstairs windows where insects are the main concern: fly screen. Street-facing windows where you want ventilation without being seen: privacy mesh. Homes with pets: pet-proof mesh (heavier fibreglass weave). Most homes benefit from a combination: security mesh on ground floor, fly screen on upper floors.
