Which Zip Blind Opacity Should You Choose? Clear, Grey, or Blackout?

Zip blinds come in four opacity levels — and the right choice depends on your specific privacy, sun, and visibility needs. This guide explains each one.
One of the most common questions we get: "Which zip blind opacity should I choose?" The answer depends on three factors: how much privacy you need, how much sun you want to block, and whether maintaining your view matters to you.
Clear (0% opacity)
Clear PVC zip blinds provide a full, unobstructed view while still blocking wind, rain, and insects. They're ideal for spaces with a premium view — a sea-facing balcony, a garden outlook, or a poolside pergola where you don't want to sacrifice the view but need weather protection.
Best for:
- Sea-facing, garden-facing, or premium view spaces
- Restaurants and commercial spaces that want to enclose without blocking views
- Spaces where you primarily need wind and rain protection
- Cold-weather enclosures — clear allows maximum solar heat gain
Light Grey (20% opacity)
Light grey tint is the most popular choice. It provides a subtle reduction in glare and heat without significantly affecting the view. You can still see out clearly, but strong sunlight is diffused. Great for east and west-facing spaces that get direct morning or afternoon sun.
Dark Grey (50% opacity)
Dark grey provides significant sun and heat reduction — blocking around half the solar radiation — while still maintaining visibility during the day. This is the right choice for south-facing spaces or anywhere that gets intense afternoon sun. You'll notice a meaningful temperature difference inside the enclosed space.
Blackout (95% opacity)
Blackout fabric is used when privacy and heat elimination matter more than the view. Common in gym enclosures, commercial kitchens, storage areas, and south-facing walls in extremely hot climates. Nearly no light passes through. Note: this fabric eliminates the outdoor view almost entirely.
"For most home terraces and balconies, light grey (20%) is the sweet spot — it looks clean, reduces heat noticeably, and you still have a full view of your outdoor space."
